Non-Union Retirees Shafted in Auto Bailouts Told to Get Jobs

Mark Modica National Legal and Policy Center (NLPC)  Thu, 05/10/2012

One of the most egregious abuses of the Obama Administration's auto bailouts was the blatant favoritism evidenced in the treatment of Delphi ~ retirees. ~ There was no logical reason for one group to have their pensions saved while another group lost theirs, just the facts that the distributions were inequitable and the only difference between the groups was that one belonged to a powerful ally of Team Obama and the other did not. ~ Evidence now surfaces of the Obama Administration rubbing salt in the wounds of the non-politically connected retirees. When the salaried retirees requested help from President Obama to restore their pension benefits, the Department of Labor's Director of Recovery for Auto Communities and Workers, Jay Williams responded, ~ "Don't like it? Get a job!"

Williams to Delphi Salaried Retirees: Get a Job!

CONTACT:  Bruce Gump, Vice Chairman, Delphi Salaried Retirees Association

On February 10th two representatives from the Delphi Salaried Retirees Association met for more than two hours with former Youngstown mayor Jay Williams who is now the Executive Director of the Office of Recovery for Auto Communities and Workers.  Several requests were delivered to Williams by the retirees and a commitment was made by him to “get back together in about three weeks.”

Sadly, the promised “follow up” meeting which could have taken the form of a simple phone conference was never held in spite of repeated requests by the retirees.  This week, nearly THREE MONTHS later a written response has been received that essentially tells the retirees to “go get a job” and only offers the standard resources of the Office of Recovery for Auto Communities and Workers.

GM Boycott Hurting Market Share?

Mark Modica, National Legal and Policy Center (NLPC), Tue, 05/08/2012

Last week's earnings report from General Motors revealed a troubling statistic for shareholders. GM's market share for North America shrunk from 18.3% a year ago to 16.7% for the latest quarter.  ~ a full 13% of consumers would now "never" consider purchasing a GM vehicle while another 15% are less likely to purchase. A negative perception of the auto bailout process and the continued political overtones at GM are the reasons for the boycott. ~ Many Americans recognize the blatant favoritism that political allies of Obama, like the UAW, have received in the GM bankruptcy process compared to other groups.  GM bondholders and taxpayers fared worse than UAW members who not only kept their jobs and benefits, but are now receiving thousands of dollars each in bonuses.  The auto bailouts seemed to have an underlying goal of protecting the powerful UAW.  Perhaps nowhere else is the blatant inequity evidenced than in the treatment of Delphi retirees.  UAW retirees had their retirement benefits protected while non-union retirees lost theirs. Congressional investigations are ongoing in the obviously biased redistribution of wealth that favored the UAW. ~
